Step by Step
1
Prepare the Çaydanlık
Fill the bottom pot of your çaydanlık (double teapot) with approximately 4 cups of fresh, cold water. Ensure it is clean and ready for brewing.

2
Add Tea Leaves to Upper Pot
Place 4 tablespoons of loose Turkish black tea leaves into the smaller, upper pot of the çaydanlık. Do not add water to the upper pot yet.

3
Boil Water in Lower Pot
Place the çaydanlık on the stovetop over medium-high heat. Bring the water in the lower pot to a rolling boil. This typically takes about 8-10 minutes.

4
Combine and Steep
Once the water in the lower pot is boiling, carefully pour about 2 cups of this hot water into the upper pot, over the tea leaves. Place the upper pot back on top of the lower pot.

5
Continue Steeping
Reduce the heat to low, ensuring the water in the lower pot continues to simmer gently. Allow the tea to steep for at least 15-20 minutes. This gentle heat keeps the tea warm and helps extract its full flavor.

6
Serve the Çay
To serve, pour a small amount of the concentrated tea from the upper pot into a traditional tulip-shaped tea glass. Then, dilute it to your desired strength with hot water from the lower pot. Serve immediately with sugar cubes on the side, if desired.
